Top Ten Things to Do This Spring

With the ground officially thawed, summer on its way, and migrating birds making their busy and musical returns, many of the 'top' activities for those in the Calgary area geared towards the outdoors.

Consider the many outdoor festivals in the city between May and June alone:

1. Fourth Street Lilac Festival ' a street fair held at 4th Street between 12 Ave SW and Elbow Drive. Live music, merchants, food and of course lilacs!

2. Calgary International Children's Festival ' at the Olympic Plaza with all kinds of family and kid-oriented events and activities.

3. Mosaic Community Cultural Festival ' at Central Memorial Park, this festival celebrates the variety of ethnic backgrounds in the city's urban community.

4. Carifest ' on Prince's Island, this festival celebrates the food, music and culture of the Caribbean and features a parade and tons of live reggae musicians.

5. Father's Day Street Festival ' at 8th Ave between 4th and 7th. This is the perfect thing to do with any 'Dad' and features cars, street performers and a huge amount of food and entertainment.

6. Inglewood Sunfest ' at 9th Ave SE (between 11 St & 14 St) in historic Inglewood this festival encourages city residents to meet and greet while enjoying the many vendors, entertainments and food stalls.

7. C-Jazz Festival ' at various venues around the city, this festival offers music lovers a great chance to enjoy performances from musicians from as far away as Cuba and Australia and includes many parties and special events.

8. Calgary Greek Festival ' an annual, three-day event that sees more than ten thousand visitors each year. It offers food, dancing, music and entertainment.If festivals aren't of much interest the city is also well-known for its markets and garden centers that can allow a visitor or resident to take some time to stop and smell (and buy) some flowers. There are more than a dozen large farmer's markets, some offering flea markets as well.
Of course, there are also some excellent public gardens and parks that perfect for a warm and sunny stroll, including:

9. TD Square with its 4-acre Devonian Gardens rooftop garden park - It has 20,000 plants, fountains, reflecting pools, waterfalls, bridges, an art gallery and a playground under its gorgeous glass roof.

10. Bowness Park ' one of the city's most popular attractions and an excellent place for people watching as well as bird watching, enjoying a picnic or even a barbecue.
