The 'City of Angels' Mesmerizes Travelers
Bangkok is filled with awe-inspiring wonders. The most visited sites include Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Po, The Grand Palace, and Wat Arun. There are also many lesser known, but just as interesting places to discover in the surrounding suburbs of Bangkok. One of these is Thonburi, where Wat Arun is located. Another temple nearby is Wat Prayoon, which has a beautiful, large white chedi. Continuing on down the Chao Phraya, is the impressive Santa Cruz Cathedral. The Thai name is known as "Wat Kuti Jiin", which was the name given to the Portuguese settlers that came here. The church can be visited only on weekends. Another interesting temple on the east side of the Chao Phraya river not far from the Saphan Taksin BTS station is Wat Yannawa. This temple has a huge boat-shaped building on the grounds and visitors can feed very large catfish in the river off of the dock here.
Ask the concierge to keep updated on various festivals and events going on around Bangkok. There is the Chinese New Year Festival around the beginning of February along with the Bangkok Film Festival. The International Bangkok Motor Show is held in March. There is a Chinatown Food Festival in the summer that should not be missed. There are also many boat trips up the river to nearby towns like Ayutthaya. There is also a small island called Koh Kred where the Mon people have their own little community right on the river north of Bangkok next to Pakkred. The train is also a fun way to travel around outer Bangkok. It has very reasonable prices and goes to various points across the country. April through July can get very hot and humid, so be prepared to take it slow when traveling outside. It begins to cool down in August and hiking and other outdoor excursions are much more tolerable.
